FIELD NOTES

LETTUCE IS PLANTED

LETTUCE IS PLANTED

The freezing nights seem to be over so we went out on a sunny morning and planted all our lettuce and kale. We planted four types of salanova lettuce and three types of kale.
NEW CHICKS! MORE EGGS TO GIVE!

NEW CHICKS! MORE EGGS TO GIVE!

We got six new baby hens today! They’re happy and yappy and the dogs are loving watching them! We’ll keep them inside until they have all their feathers to keep them warm. About 6 weeks til they go to the coop.
HUGELKULTUR

HUGELKULTUR

Hugelwhat? Hugelkultur is the idea of filling the bottom of your garden beds with logs and sticks and other woody material. Why? It takes up space so we need less soil and compost. And, as the logs break down they hold water and become sponges that the plant roots can tap into.
TIME FOR NEW GARDEN BEDS (and a lot of work)

TIME FOR NEW GARDEN BEDS (and a lot of work)

Some of our garden beds have been rotting, so we decided to build some new ones. Since we had to remove all the soil, then build them, then put the soil back in, it turned out to be a lot of work. But totally worth it.
SEEDLINGS ARE READY, WEATHER IS NOT

SEEDLINGS ARE READY, WEATHER IS NOT

Our kale seedlings are getting huge (because we sowed them too early!) and they’re ready to get into the ground. But the weather says not so fast. It’s going to be in the 20s this week. Hopefully, just a few more days.
LET IT SNOW

LET IT SNOW

Last night there was a huge snowstorm and we got about 15 inches of snow. It’s hard to believe spring is coming any time soon. Our notes from last year’s garden show we transplanted lettuce on March 18. Almost no way that’ll happen this year, but who knows?
BAD SEEDS?

BAD SEEDS?

We sowed 20 spinach seeds two weeks ago, but none have come up yet. The seeds are two years old so they should still be good. Next step, we’ll try again. But this time we’ll put about 6 seeds in each seed cell to give us a better chance.
HELLO BABY PLANTS

HELLO BABY PLANTS

We have seedlings! Every time we plant a seed it feels like there’s no way it’ll turn into a big healthy plant. But nature is amazing and now we have a bunch of healthy seedlings.
FINALLY, SEED STARTING!

FINALLY, SEED STARTING!

After a long winter we finally started some seeds today. We sowed three different types of kale and a new lettuce called “spinach lettuce” that’s supposed to be part lettuce and part spinach. In the next couple days and weeks we’ll start more seeds.
